Dave thank you for sharing. A similar incident happens to me a few years ago. I recognise the disconnected surprise at my own behaviour and sense you also surprised yourself. As I reflect on both our experiences it strikes me meditation and other such practices allow our true natures to spontaneously arise when needed. Thanks again and well done you.

Some years ago when my younger daughter was taking martial arts lessons from a Vietnamese army colonel I learned the difference between knowledge and wisdom. I see the same in your story. Perhaps the sober man learned some that night.
