You said it all - it begins with humility. The basics were taught to us a long time ago. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." "the only person you should attempt to control is yourself."; "He who humbles himself will be exalted and he who exalts himself will be humbled." "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. " "Do not covet thy neighbor's possession." "Pride goeth before a fall." "We're all human. Humans make mistakes. Forgiveness is divine.", "Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change what I can and the wisdom to know the difference." Forget that some of these truths on how to live humanely in concert with your neighbors and the world may have been taught to us by religions that have otherwise been subverted to justify unjust behavior. The basics apply to all of us and are the grounding we should retreat to - especially when hubris, greed, envy and self-righteousness rear their ugly heads.

Thanks for a much-needed thinking piece Dave.

Well said. Let's imagine the world we could live in if this one principle was deeply ingrained in all parenting, teaching, preaching, thinking, feeling, and therefore our hour-to-hour behaviors.
